[He's okay.]

Tuesday Bill hadn't gotten back from the hospital in time for his shift, and had doctor's orders to take the day off anyways.

Wednesday he takes the truck to work; he hasn't spoken to Dave or Rudy since the hospital (though Kate called Sarah to let her and Dave know when Bill was released).

When Bill steps into the department everyone looks up. Nancy gives him a greeting from the front desk, and he can see her hesitance to say more. Dave and Rudy are both at the coffee machine, filling up before heading out. They both look at Bill, then each other, and Rudy moves off as Bill approaches.

Resisting the urge to duck his head or work his throat, Bill stands beside Dave and pours himself a cup of coffee.

"Mornin'," Bill says, and somehow manages to make it sound casual.

Dave gives a nod and lifts his cup a little, just as easy.

Bill fixes his coffee while Dave drinks his own, both in silence.

Bill knows he owes Dave an apology for the other night, and tries to find one as he pours out cream and sugar.

He's halfway through his cup and Dave is setting his empty one down before Bill breaks the silence.

"Hey, Dave, listen, I-- I'm doin' alright, fine enough to be here an' all, but I kinda wanna take it easy for a bit. You uh, y'mind drivin' today?"

Dave pauses in putting on his cap, and looks at Bill.

A handful of heartbeats pass, then Dave smiles and gives a nod.

"'Course I don't."

Bill nods, his own smile breaking out, and finishes his mug.

As the pair walks out, Dave holds the door and says, "Y'can't drive for shit on your best days, don't even wanna see it after you've had your brains rattled."
