A/N: Continuing woe that starts here. Then there is this and then Crystal wrote more breaky. This is that breaky on Bill's side so the dialogue is all hers along with the fault.
He should just go home, there's nothing for him here.
He knew when he sat down to wait nothing would come of it but somehow still managed to allow himself to hope.
The hope is gone now, though, and he's dragging himself up from his chair when the front door opens again. He almost doesn't look up; he's pushing in his chair when the light catching blond hair draws his attention and makes him turn.
His heart races and sinks at the same time and he's moving forward before he realizes it. She's standing in the threshold, looking lost but he misses it as he comes up in front of her, eyes and throat burning.
"Kate. Oh god, I-- "
She turns to look at him swiftly and just stares. There's a startled look in her eyes but he doesn't see it as his words tumble out.
"Kate're you -- m'sorry, Jesus Christ, I'm so sorry -- "
"No, you don't need to apologize," she shakes her head almost distractedly, giving their surroundings a wary look then turning it on him. This time, he notices.
"I'm afraid I can't place -- have we met?"
He doesn't understand and pleads with her so that she does, "Kate, it's -- it's me. It's Bill."
"I -- "
She's still shaking her head and he tries again, desperately.
"Bill Pardy."
And then someone walks in behind her.
Bill's eyes shift as she turns and he sees the face of the man behind her, hears his name, and he loses that last piece of his heart he'd been clutching onto.
"Hey."
Her voice is soft and fond and she could be talking to him, but she isn't.
"Hey."
Jack's smiling, his hand on the small of her back and it could be Bill's there, but it isn't.
"Looks like I've got some explaining to do. Lucky the place picked up both of us at the same time."
"I was wondering when you put a bar in your apartment."
His eyes are back on her when she turns around and the apologetic half-smile she offers him tears him to pieces.
"Bill, I -- "
Shaking his head he works his throat to find his voice, blue eyes never leaving hers.
"M'sorry, I -- it's my mistake. You … you just look like a Kate I used to know."
There's that confusion again, written on her face and he knows.
"That's quite the coinci -- "
"Welcome to Milliways, an' y-y'all have a … a good night."
This isn't his Kate.
He forces himself to turn away and move off, Jack's voice drifting to his ears.
"Who was that?"
In the doorway Bill pauses, leaning heavily on it's frame. He listens, then decides he can't bear to hear her answer so moves off.
She doesn't know.
